Reece’s road to recovery

On Saturday 9th December at about 12:30pm my brother in law Reece was at Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails celebrating the birthday of a close family member.

Reece has raced motocross and mountain bikes for years so there was no concern about him going for a leisurely ride with family while on holidays.

Reece was thrown from his bike over a jump and was in and out of consciousness for 8 hours, suffering from short term amnesia and no recollection of the crash.

After being rushed from Derby to Launceston he was told his scans were fine and sent home with no guidance or additional support before flying out of Tassie on Monday.

Once back home in Wodonga, Victoria Reece went to the hospital to get a second opinion due to the immeasurable pain he was in.

Results came back that Reece had 5 broken vertebrae, 4 bulged discs in addition to 3 hematomas in his hip, groin and back that are crushing 2 nerves. The doctors have advised how lucky he is to be alive following the crash and the days he spent without medical help.

Recovery will involve specialist appointments, medication and rehab in addition to taking months off work to recover from his injury.

Reece is a stand up guy who is the first to help anyone and I’m hoping that we can all band around him and support him so that his sole focus can be on his recovery ahead.
