In the spring of 2018, My sister, Heather had a cough that just wouldn’t go away. After a month of making her own attempts to rid the cough, she went to the doctor who prescribed an antibiotic. Of course, after an antibiotic anyone would assume this cough would go away. Unfortunately, after another month of the cough getting worse, she returned to the doctor. Heather has never had any major medical conditions. She was a healthy 45-year-old woman, never smoked, doesn’t drink, and had always taken great pride in caring for herself and her family.
Doctor took x-rays and entered her exam room with a face of shock and says “Heather we need further testing, a CAT scan.” After several additional tests, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer that had spread to her kidneys, liver, spine and hip bones.
The Cancer is aggressive and Heather needs to start treatment immediately but wait my sister, Heather doesn’t have health insurance. After 18 years of great family coverage with her ex-husband’s medical plan, he lost his job in December. The overwhelming costs have now begun to show themselves. As you can imagine, the costs to save her life on average is over 10,000 a month, not including the 1.5hr commute to the preferred cancer care treatment center in Philadelphia, the cost of housing to help her family during their stay to support her during treatment, cost of helping ends meet while Heather is unable to work and support her children.
