Service Learning Class

Hello Friends and Family,
I have taken on the challenge of creating a service learning course at my school this year in order to get our children involved in their community. We are an International Baccalaureate World School and service learning is a key aspect in creating global learners. As I build this course from the ground up, I have many ideas I wish to implement. Unfortunately, we are a high poverty community of mainly immigrant families and fundraising is tough for us. We need funds so we can become a No Place for Hate school. This will cost $1000 to partner with the Anti-Defamation League. We also would like to work with Brookdale Senior Home by bringing in Alzheimer's patients twice a month to play games with our students. Funding to partner with an organization named Through Hoops to Hope will cost about $500 for the year. We are also partnering with LIMBS International to help raise money for people in developing countries who have lost legs and do not have adequate access to medical care. We plan to raise funds to help purchase prosthetic legs. Additionally, we will be running a safe community based Halloween experience for K-6 students at the school where they can trick-or-treat within the building. This will require LOTS of candy being purchased. Lastly, my students will be tutoring at local elementary schools twice a week and this will require transportation costs. My students will be fundraising throughout the class, but we need some seed money to get these programs started. I will post frequent updates as to how the class is progressing. I hate asking for help like this, but I want to provide the best possible experience for my students and help instill the value of voluntary service and becoming involved within their communities, local and global. Thank you in advance.
Erik
