Hi, my name is Lauren Travers and eight years ago I started Amazing Magic Beans Learning Center, a preschool in Queens, NY. After watching many of our children leave us as excited, inquisitive learners and then return to tell us school was just , "ok" I decided I really wanted to change that experience so that all of our kids would feel inspired by the idea of learning and the schools they went to.
I asked questions about starting a Charter School, I looked at all of the options and then learned that right now the systems in Education were challenging when you wanted to try something new.
This is when, working with a group of inspired parents and teachers I launched a pilot of an idea called: The Q StudioLab. This idea has grown into a laboratory school dedicated to expanding the possibilities for the education of all New York City children. We want to support the success of children both academically and personally and demonstrate protocols for increasing the flexible thinking and creative problem solving skills that will be necessary for this next generation.
After this first year, I have realized that as a community we can change how teaching occurs both through our laboratory school and in the public schools as well.
Our focus is three-fold: creating stimulating environments that encourage individual exploration of academic subjects through the use of creative materials and methods thus expanding the learning dialogue, participation in the community where we live and the practical applications of these academic subjects for children,and establishing standards for teachers to use diverse teaching methods in a variety of classrooms.
Please help us to get through this first year and grow this idea into the full organization and movement that it can be.
