2nd Annual 48 For Floyd

Donation protected
TLDR—

Our annual 48 for Floyd running events are held to bring awareness to social inequality and injustice. This year, we’re continuing to support programs that help under-represented and disenfranchised communities by donating all funds raised to SMASH and ChickTech.

SMASH provides students of color with an intensive STEM education and critical resources that allow them to be successful in college and in their careers.

ChickTech is dedicated to retaining women in the tech workforce and increasing the number of women and girls pursuing technology-based careers.

How you are related to your beneficiary (where the funds are ultimate going)
The funds raised  will be withdrawn by Justin Shields, and donated 50/50 between ChickTech and Smash. Both programs are helping disenfranchised and underrepresented communities break into the STEM field.

How exactly you will be handling the funds outside of GoFundMe
Once the funds have been withdrawn, they will be donated to ChickTech and Smash through their online portal.

ONE YEAR AGO ...

It's crazy that it has already been 1 year since we completed the Inaugural 48 For Floyd.

Last year, after George Floyd was killed, we just wanted to help create change any way we could. Our goal was to bring light to the injustices African Americans face on a daily basis, and also spread awareness of the police brutality that occurs with regularity in African American communities.

After raising and donating $60,000 through our 48 For Floyd event, we decided to continue pushing for change.

EVENTS

In August 2020, we raised and donated $12,000 to the LAUSD Grab ‘n Go Food Centers. These centers provide FREE meals for these students in need.

In October, we hosted #RunToThePolls, a challenge focused on raising awareness about the Presidential Election.

In December, we donated over $2,000 dollars worth of toys to Toys for Tots, and over 50lbs of clothes to the Los Angeles Mission.

In January 2021, we donated $1,000 dollars to Operation Warm, a nonprofit that creates brand-new, high-quality coats for children in need.

FOCUS

This year, we’re coming into the second annual 48 For Floyd with greater focus and bigger heart after the recent passing of Tyler, our charismatic and intelligent co-founder. Tyler was a Cloud Architect who was passionate about the importance of education. He wanted to mentor at-risk underprivileged children and introduce them to the STEM field.  Our focus this year is to continue Tyler's legacy by introducing STEM learning to Minority populations.

Minority populations—particularly girls, non-English speakers, and the economically disadvantaged—are poorly represented in STEM fields. Studies show inequalities and gaps in STEM learning begin early in a child's life, making it difficult to catch up with their more advantaged peers.

We’re running for change again. 4 miles every 4 hours until we hit 48 miles! 48 Miles in 2 Days. #48FORFLOYD. We’re doing it for Tyler. We’re doing it for Floyd. We’re doing it to provide an opportunity.

All proceeds raised will be donated to two great organizations. SMASH Academy and ChickTech

SMASH provides students of color with an intensive STEM education and critical resources that allow them to be successful in college and in their careers.

By supporting this initiative you will help to provide a solid foundation of STEM and early literacy for children across the US that will result in more economically disadvantaged children, girls, English language learners and minority populations represented in STEM related fields in years to come.

We will be posting all of our runs, and updates on our Instagram pages.
