San Francisco Sea Scout Capsize
Donation protected
Sea Scout Ship "Viking" serves San Francisco girls age 14-20 using their 1939 sailing whaleboat as a leadership and nautical skills platform. On 3 Sept 2016 an equipment malfunction caused the boat the capsize tossing 15 scouts and one adult into SF Bay. The crew was quickly rescued by Coast Guard and SFPD Marine units, but the boat went adrift out the Golden Gate in heavy seas. Recovering the boat off the Marin Headlands was successful with much damage to the hull and rig. The salvage bill is not covered by insurance, so we have an immediate need for help and before the girls can sail again they need money for new sails, hull repairs, standing rigging replacement, deck repairs, all the safety gear, 16' oars and a shopping list of small items.
