Deke has $150,000.00 in medical bills. Please consider donating!
Derek, or as most of his friends and family know him, Deke, is one of the most hardworking and selfless people we know. He has always been a loyal friend, and is the first to volunteer when others need help. He recently suffered a life-changing injury and now he needs your help. He has no idea that we have created this GoFundMe page as he would never want to put his burden on others, but we all need help from time to time.
We were spending a nice day on the lake with friends when the rope swing that Deke was swinging from snapped. He landed in extremely shallow water and suffered from a very severe injury to his ankle, including shattering one of his bones completely and almost taking off his entire foot. It required multiple surgeries and may require more in the future. The doctor said he has never seen anything so bad. Thanks to the quick thinking of our friends, the doctor said that they might have saved his foot from being amputated by keeping it elevated and moist. Deke was also so grateful that his brother, Dustin was at his side for support during the accident and throughout the surgeries. He is not yet out of the dark though. We are praying that he is able to heal without infection so he can still keep his foot and live a normal life.
Deke has been forced to leave his life in Washington D.C. and is currently attempting to recover with the help of his mom and brother in his hometown in upstate New York. He has been working for a landscaping company for the last 5 years. However, he was let go from his job as soon as they found out about this devastating injury and now has no income. Deke has a built a career as a skilled laborer. If, and only if, he makes a full recovery, he may not ever be able to return to that line of work again. Even forgetting his unfathomable medical bills, which are currently over $150,000, he has no income to continue to make his car payments or keep his apartment.
We are hoping to relieve Deke of some of this stress by ensuring him he that will still have his car and home waiting for him while he recovers. This piece of mind will no doubt also help speed up his recovery. So we are hoping to raise enough money to keep Deke afloat for at least the next 3 months and Make a small dent in his medical bills. Realistically though, the doctors have told him that it will be at least 6 months before he can move around on crutches and take care of himself. While the road to recovery will be long and painful for Deke, we want to do what we can to help him in the short term. Even if we don’t reach our goal, anything will help.
Please help our friend, Deke, in his great time of need.
