Scotty's Story
It was a cold January morning 1964 in Augusta, Ga. when the eye doctor said "Yes mother, there's something wrong".  At nine months of age, my husband was diagnosed with a devastating cancer called Retinoblastoma. His left eye, and nearly his life, was destroyed by the invasive cancer. The doctors in Augusta sent him to specialists that were familiar with that type of cancer in New York City. The doctors there removed Scotty's left eye and used what they knew of radiation in the 1960's to kill the cancer and save his life. He was treated for several years as a young child with various forms of radiation. His life was spared, but the radiation caused deformities in his facial structure.
Scotty grew up in Graniteville, S.C. and by the age of 4 showed a great love for music & drums. He was a member of the marching band in high school and later as a teenager joined a band and traveled throughout the southeast performing & pursuing his love of music. He eventually returned home, but continued playing drums and performing locally with other musicians.
In 2001 Scotty joined the Aiken County School System as a Special Education aide. I am a second grade teacher. We met through the school system and married in 2009. Nine months after our wedding, Scotty was diagnosed with cancer again, this time a different kind that was found in the sinuses. He underwent a couple of surgeries in 2010 to remove the tumor. In 2005, Scotty had become an aide for a child with cerebral palsy. He formed a bond with that child and remained his friend and advocate from first grade through eleventh grade.  Unfortunately, Scotty's deteriorating eyesight in his remaining eye forced him to resign from that position in June 2016.
This past summer, Scotty had what was believed to be a polyp removed from the same sinus cavity where the cancer occurred in 2010. The biopsy showed a malignant, rare type of cancer called Leiomyosarcoma. We have incurred high medical expenses during the past several months as a result of this diagnosis. Scotty is facing more surgery in October to remove any remaining cancer in his sinuses. We are private people who don't usually ask for help, but feel the financial need to do so now.
As a child, Scotty's survival was uncertain. But today, he is a 53-year-old fighter. Scotty still plays drums in the praise band at our church. He loves music, the outdoors, animals, and helping those less fortunate than himself. I always look at Scotty as one of God's special children who still has much to do here in this life. Your donations at this time of need will help Scotty as he continues on his journey.
