Help Nathaniel get back on his feet

George Patton once said that “courage is fear holding on a minute longer” and on August 25, 2016, my son held on a minute longer and made the right choice. While doing morning errands, he lost control of his car and faced a stark decision: the oncoming lane of traffic or the forest. He purposely chose the trees, refusing to hurt anyone else. In that moment, my son was a hero, and that choice, while leaving him broken and in critical condition, kept his soul intact.  When faced with a life threatening situation, he held a minute longer to avoid people and hit three trees instead.

Nathaniel suffered two grave spinal compression fractures, a broken wrist, a fractured clavicle, two broken ribs, and burns on his arms, road rash all over his body, including his face. Every time I was faced with bad news, I called out the blessings showered on us like a mantra. He was alive, with no internal organ injuries, no broken neck and no skull fracture. His girlfriend’s large Trailblazer saved his life. His small Honda Civic would not have protected him.

Nathaniel, who had worn seat belts since a beginning driver, was not wearing one that morning. In a hurry to complete an errand around the corner, he left without that critical protection. That decision haunts him, but he is forging ahead with a positive attitude and renewed commitment to the good old safety belt.

This journey is a four-part process and we are in the midst of the second part, having left the hospital after a 16-day stay and two surgeries. We are half way through the two-week rehab process and are about to begin the third phase – home health. We are outfitting our home to host Nathaniel on the first floor until he can climb the stairs.

This fundraising is very important to our family. It will offset some of the medical bills that are already pouring in (the emergency ambulance ride alone was $1,300.) While some of his medical care will be absorbed by the hospital, some expenses, such as certain doctors’ bills, will not. We are bracing for those. We have been blessed to be offered a scholarship bed at the rehab center for two weeks and I am very grateful to the very kind ladies who helped me navigate the maze of paperwork at a very vulnerable time. We have met many angels along the way who have provided great love and support. But substantial bills will not be covered and we need and appreciate your help.

I invite you to begin the journey with us and follow Nathaniel’s new road to recovery. It will lead to the final phase of this journey: his return home to his girlfriend Sarah – the final and most anticipated phase.

Thank you! Merci!

From a hopeful and grateful mother

Martine
