West Cork Rapid Response

My name is Olivia, and six years ago, I was training for the Cork City Marathon; due to an old injury, I decided to go for a cycle that morning and 10 minutes up the road; I was involved in a hit and run accident. I was so fortunate to receive critical care at the side of the road from the West Cork Rapid Response team, and without it, I would not have made it to the hospital or be alive today.

It took months in hospital in CUH and then the NRH, years of outpatient therapies and treatments and years of training and learning how to push through the pain to get me to this point. So to make it extra special, as this was the marathon I was due to run the day after I was hit on the 2nd of June 2016, I challenged the man that came to my care that day to do the marathon with me. Dr. Jason had never done a marathon before but agreed to do it with me as he knew how special this one would be. I'm so grateful to everyone who helped me get to this point. To be still alive to do this is a miracle, then to be able to run the marathon I never got to do is like closure for me, and to be able to run through the streets of Cork with one of the people that saved my life is so very special to me in every way.

WCRR is a voluntary service that operates for us all, and I hope you will never need to use them, but if you do, they will be there to help you in any way they can.

As well as trying to raise funds for this fantastic service, I want to raise awareness about this amazing team of people who are willing to give up their valuable time, personal life, and family time to help others.
