JOSHUA'S JOURNEY STORY!
Facebook@joshaparicio
For all of my family and friends, Joshua Aparicio has hypodiploid B-cell Acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Let's start at the beinging, 3 weeks ago joshua started having pains in his legs, and wasnt feeling good, at first we thought maybe growing pains associated with puberty, after all hes an 11 year old growing boy. After a couple days of these pains i had him a Drs appt however they couldnt get him in for a 1 1/2 weeks. A couple more days passed and the pains had gone away, however he wasnt feeling better. Things seemed to be worsening, he had no energy, was tired all the time, mood swings, poor appetite, and weight loss. I called to make another appointment, however with him already having an appt in place 2 days later, they had me weight. At his appt i informed his primary dr of his symptoms, she then decided to run some blood work. 2 days later we got the call that labs where back and something was not right with his blood cells and where asked to please go to doernbechers and that they would be expecting us. So we went. Upon arrival we had no information no idea what was going on. Then where told that all of joshuas blood cell counts where off, and that there was a possibility of leukemia. They told us that he would be having a bone morrow and spinal fluid procedure, in the morning and that we would know more. At 330 this morning they did more blood work. At 745 they came in to prep him for his bone morrow, spine fuild and picc line procedure, and told us that when they looked at the blood under the microscope , the shape of the cells or indicators of leukemia. The procedures went smoothly. Later the doctors came into talk to us. They didnt have their results yet however Tillamook had sent off for additional testing, and the results if that was consistent with that of B-ALL. They where waiting for their results to validate the findings. However the plan is to proceed with starting treatment tomorrow morning. Thank you everyone for all your prayers kind words and support during this time.
**UPDATE 9/3**
Drs came with the results of the spinal fuild testing, he does have some leukemia cells in his spine, which means he will have to have a few extra lumbar procedures to inject chemo into his spine.
He has started his leukemia treatment this morning, and is currently receiving his first round of chemo.
**UPDATE 9/4**
Joshua is reaponding well to the treatment and chemotherapy. Taking his medications like a champ. He is still on iv fluids to help flush out his body. If things go well, and he continues to maintain drinking fluids on his own, he may be able to come off the iv fluids tomorrow. He has a lumbar procedure on Tuesday and if things go well we may be able to go home, and only have to come out to doernbecher 2x per week for outpatient treatment. Fingers crossed! Thats all for now will, have a good evening.
**UPDATE 9/5**
Joshua is continuing to respond well to his treatment and chemo, his labs are looking good, so they are able to decrease blood draws from every 12 hours to 24 hours, and they can turn down the iv fluids. He will still be having the procedure in the morning to inject chemo into his spine. We will also be meeting another team of doctor's tomorrow, which i believe will be the team for his outpatient treatments, and if everything continues to look good, we maybe able to go home.
**UPDATE 9/6**
Joshuas blood counts where down this morning so his is currently recieving a blood transfusion. Then afterwards he will receive his second round of chemo, followed by his lumbar procedure to inject chemo into his spine at 3. Then he will be released this evening.
***Just finished up the blood transfusion, getting ready to start the second round of chemo. I already went down and got all his medication and epi-pen for when we go home.
****Chemo went smoothly this morning. They just finished up his lumbar procedure, we had a slight hick up, the nurse and doctor let joshua eat pepperoni and cream cheese this morning then when we went to the procedure room the tech said that they where unable to completely put him to sleep, but did awesome. Hes just waking up, and got to talk to a lady about the make a wish foundation. Here in a couple hours we will be headed home.
*****We have been discharged. Getting Joshua some McDonald's and headed home.
**UPDATE 9/7**
We are home!! Last night went good. Got some sleep with out waking up in feeling like a 80 year old women lol. Joshua is feeling pretty good this morning. Today will be a day for getting schedules and routines figured out and making sure Joshua gets rest. Its being set up to hopefully within the next two weeks he will start tutoring and lightened work load, so that he doesnt fall behind in school.
*** Joshua won't tell you, but he's been extremely tired today, just one of the side effects of chemo. Hoping he gets some rest tonight.
**UPDATE 9/8**
Today was our first of experiencing any ups and downs. I ended up calling Doernbechers 2x today, the first was around 3:00 joshua was experiencing some tenderness/pain in his back along with a headache. They suggested checking his temp if no fever, giving some Tylenol and monitoring closely. If pain worsened next step would be ER. thankfully it did not get to that point. i took a bath, and i gave him some Tylenol and he laid down, shortly after he was feeling better. Then about 715 I called again becausw he threw up right after giving meds and i wasnt sure what to do in regards to medication. the dr called in zofran. i was a little worried that safeway wouldn't finish it tonight since it was so close to closing time, but they where awesome. after giving Josh the medicine he was able to eat and take meds. Now hes alseep. tomorrow we go to doernbecher for clinic, and ive got a list of questions ready.
Will update along the way as we help joshua battle leukemia!
