Support for Barbara Horn, in Memory of Paul Horn

Donation protected
Several weeks ago, on March 9th, we bid farewell to Paul Horn, husband, brother, cousin, uncle and friend.  Paul enriched all around him, young and old, with a unique, generous and creative spirit, and a sense of humor (oh, the puns…) that always left us with a smile.  Paul has been called a “connector”…  he connected with people, and people with each other, wherever he went.

But as much as we’ll miss him, this story and request for support is about Barbara, our equally wonderful sister, cousin, aunt and friend, who shared life with Paul for over 41 years.

Paul bravely fought several health conditions in recent years, saying little about them except to those closest to him, but always with Barb by his side.  As his health deteriorated, Paul (a carpenter and cabinet maker) found it difficult and finally impossible to work, resulting in a complete loss of income.  Paul and Barb were planning to move gradually into retirement. That plan is now gone.  Barb isn't a quitter, though. She returned immediately to her full-time job, but faces two critical financial needs.  Each need could move from being urgent, to an emergency, without significant help from family and friends.

* First:  In order to continue working, Barb needs to replace her 23-year-old Subaru station wagon that Paul carefully maintained.  Her job requires daily, extensive travel through Denver highway traffic and surrounding locations, during all seasons, often returning home late into the evening and after dark. The Subaru has served her well, but it's past time for newer, safer, and more reliable transportation. ($15,000-20,000)  This is Barb's most critical need. We'd like to provide her with the funds to purchase a newer/used car no later than April 30!

* Second: Paul’s passing resulted in significant and unexpected expenses. In addition, many continuing expenses are now difficult to meet, including their house mortgage.  Barb is liquidating assets... Paul’s tools, their 21-year-old truck, and the 21-year-old camper that took them on countless adventures... but those funds will be gone quickly.  In time Barb will have to sell their house in Denver so she can transition to living on her own, but a financial bridge is needed to help her get there. ($10,000-15,000)   We'd like to provide her with this amount by May 15th.

Paul and Barb have graced their families and all the communities they lived in... Monhegan Island, Maine, Harrisville, NH, and Denver... with their generosity, kindness and friendship, while never asking for or expecting anything in return.  As the best among us do, they have always “paid it forward”.  Many people asked: “What can we do to help?”  This is it.  This is how we each can help.  We can help Barb move on with her life, and in doing so recognize, remember, and celebrate the kindness and wonderful spirit with which both she and Paul have lived.

Final thoughts: Barb’s and Paul’s family members have committed to do what they can financially, but to reach the goals we've set will take a larger community of angels!  We have started making our contributions (anonymously) before we reach out to others.  No one person's angel's wings are big enough to reach the goal alone, but together we can.

You can help in two ways:

1-    Please contribute whatever you can! For Barb's sake, we're hoping to shoot right past the goal! Any contributions above the goal will help Barb begin a much needed retirement fund.

2-    Sharing the fundraiser is critical to its success! Please pass the link you’ll find below on to five or six (or ten or twenty!) of your contacts. You can use email, text, Twitter, or post the page on Facebook or Instagram.  You can also re-post it every week for two or three weeks to keep this effort rolling.  In a short amount of time, there will be enough angels doing whatever they can, and that will help us reach our goal.

3-    You can contribute by name, or anonymously.  Do whichever suits you.
4-    For direct contributions, you can contact me at my email (above).
5-    I’ll keep this page updated on progress, or you can check back anytime.

This is appeal is made on behalf of both Barb's and Paul's families.  We all thank you!

Earl Horn, Paul’s brother.
