Dear Friends and Family--
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. It is very difficult for me to be public about this matter and I’m not the kind of person that finds it easy to ask for help. On Friday the 22nd of November I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This distressing, unexpected news has obviously been a tremendous shock to me, my husband, and my family. The cancer is in its early stages and is very treatable. We are deeply grateful and relieved for this positive prognosis.
Those that know me know I live in New York but I am from the UK. I discovered the lump while I was visiting the UK. I feel fortunate that the discovery was made here and that I have the support of my family to help me get through this difficult time. I will be continuing my treatment here in London to be near my family, who have all been amazing and I don’t know what I would have done without their support.
I’m reaching out for your help because, although the NHS system has unbelievable free healthcare, I have had to do a lot of the preliminary tests and scans privately. Because the NHS is so overwhelmed and underfunded the wait times are incredibly long and these wait times were going to have a significant impact on when I could begin my treatment. Initially I thought we could manage the costs, but as more tests and procedures keep having to be done, the bills are piling up and the costs are starting to feel overwhelming.
There were certain treatments we were hoping to get via the NHS before my chemo commenced, but the NHS weren't able to get them done in time, so we must self-fund these treatments. There is also an array of alternative medicine that isn't available on the NHS that really help with the side effects of the chemotherapy. I will be undergoing chemotherapy for the next 5 months and then I will be having surgery. I'm diving into this with all the strength I have and I want to make use of every possible treatment I can to reinforce my health while I fight this battle. It’s all incredibly stressful to say the least. It took some encouragement for me to create a GoFundMe and I am doing so because I won't be able to seek all the treatments I need without your help. In today’s world, with healthcare in its current state, more and more people are having to seek alternative means to fund their medical treatment. Although I feel very humbled asking for your help, I feel very thankful there is the means to do so. This experience has completely rocked me to the core and my heart goes out to everyone who’s going through this, gone through this or had a family member diagnosed with cancer. I begin my chemotherapy today, wish me luck. Much love and thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sasha.
