Save Kichwa at FLACSO Ecuador

My name is Michael Uzendoski.  I am an anthropologist who has worked with Kichwa speaking peoples in Ecuador for over 20 years.

The place I work at is called FLACSO (https://www.flacso.edu.ec/portal/) and we are the top research university in Ecuador specializing in the social sciences.   I am raising money for our Kichwa langauge program because it is in danger of closing due to lack of funding.  FLACSO Ecuador is in a financial crisis and no longer is able to support one of our most popular and relevant courses, KICHWA LANGUAGE AND CULTURE.  I am only asking support for the salary of our Kichwa Professor Luis Alberto Tuaza.  Luis Alberto holds a Ph.D. from FLACSO and is a Native Kichwa speaker from Chimborazo.

This request is urgent because the course will close by October 12th if we do not have the financial support or 14 external students who would pay the tuition fee ($375).

Why is this signficant?  Kichwa is the most widely spoken indigenous langauge in the Americas, but it is a language that is in danger of disappearing in future generations.   Research and teaching in Ecuadorian Unversities is crucial to our mission of revitalization and support to indigneous communities.  For example, you can see some of our work here, a Kichwa movie based on an Amazonian legend....  https://vimeo.com/184114231/f6db43e115

While FLACSO has an archive of languages and cultures (http://www.flacsoandes.edu.ec/lenguas-culturas/en/sobre-el-archivo/que-es/)
that we started in 2010 in association with the Anthropology Program  the Max Planck Institute, an archive is no substitute for an active langauge program that teaches a living indingeous language.  It would be a tragedy to lose our Kichwa language program due to the financial crisis that our University faces during these difficult times in Ecuador.

Many of us at FLACSO, especially Luis Alberto, have dedicated their lives to the Kichwa language but without funding we cannot continue our research and work on Kichwa language and culture.  We would be very grateful for any amount you could contribute, or even better if you would like to take the class as an external, paying student.

You can register for the class here: https://www.flacso.edu.ec/portal/index.php?module=academico&func=display&table=especializacion&id=431&lang=en

Yupaychani (thank you in Kichwa).
