On August 29, 2016, Fireman Darius Linton, Fireman Austin Jenkins and District Chef Jeff Phillips were traveling to Gallup, New Mexico to teach a hazardous material training class at the Western Refinery Fire Department Training Facility.
Within a few miles of reaching the destination on interstate 40 they were hit head on by a driver, driving on the wrong side of the freeway in a small suv. Both vehicles was traveling about 70 mph when they collided. Darius Linton took the brunt of the injuries because he was the driver. After a 40 minute extraction to free him from the wreckage he was life flighted to the University of New Mexico Hospital Trauma Center in Albuquerque, NM. District Chief Jeff Phillips and Firemen Austin Jenkins were transported by ambulance to a local hospital in Gallup, NM. District Chief Phillips sustained a broken arm and Fireman Austin Jenkins suffered cuts and bruises. It has been over 51 days since the accident and Darius's road to recovery is going well after about 6 surgeries and several minor procedures. The road to recovery is a long way. The task of being over 1000 miles from home has been a hard burden however his wife has been by his side as his nurse assistant.
Without a transfer to Houston he will have have to stay in New Mexico for a heart surgery that will require him to be there an additional 60 days. On going expenses incurred due to the accident and unforseen expenses are as follows:
Air medical flight
Lodging
Daily Meals
Transportation to and from hospital

Uncovered medical expenses
Legal expenses
