Dia's Medical Fund

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this and hopefully be touched as I was when I first met Dia.

Dia is 9 years old and is in 4th grade attending The Texas School for the Blind. She has a fiery personality and she instantly lights up a room wherever she goes. Unfortunately Dia hasn’t had the easiest time in her nine years due to some medical issues.

Dia went in for a vision appointment and after the vision appointment doctors concluded that Dia’s optic nerve was dull. She then went and had an MRI done. Doctors discovered that Dia had a brain tumor known as suprasellar craniopharyngioma. This type of tumor is located on the pituitary gland, and is rare amongst young children. Dia underwent brain surgery at the children’s hospital in Dallas, she had a biopsy and evacuation of the tumor cyst. The tumor was inoperable. Post-surgery, Dia developed vision loss, she became completely blind in the right and minimal/tunneled in the left.

Dia underwent several surgeries over the next four months, driving to and from Dallas. Do to the amount of surgeries in short period of time, Dia was eligible for a radiation injection which would be injected into the biggest cyst that the tumor produced. Treatment was a success, but no guaranties that the cyst won’t redevelop on the tumor. Three years had went by, and ongoing MRI’s were good.  Right when you think, things have settled, Dia’s mom had received the news she never wanted to hear…..

The past couple days have been a bit overwhelming for Dia and her mom. They received not so good news after they drove to Houston for an urgent MRI. Dia had lost vision in the eye that she had once had a little vision in. Her pediatric oncologist wanted to see her immediately.

When they saw the oncologist yesterday morning he had mentioned if the tumor had grown, radiation therapy will be discussed as the next step.

As the day had prolonged it only got longer and harder, trying to stay strong and hold back the tears, by taking a deep breathe in.

Dia’s neuro-ophthalmology appointment didn’t go very well. Dia’s vision had significantly changed. She had a sedated MRI late that night. They spoke to doctor late that night regarding the MRI results. Dia and her mom’s worst fears had been confirmed. A new area of the tumor had produced a cyst which has been pressing up against her optic chiasm that has caused her the loss in vision. Surgery will be scheduled ASAP do to the location of the new developed cyst on tumor. Then followed with either gemotheropy (sp) or radiation therapy. Dia will be having surgery Monday October 10th.

Her mother is a single mother working very hard to try and make ends meet for all her daughters’ medical needs. She doesn’t like to ask for help and takes pride on doing everything on her own but I decided with her consent or not I was going to try and make a difference in her and her daughter’s life. She has touched me in more ways than one and I hope you all feel the desire to help her out on this journey. If you are strapped for money prayers are more than appreciated. If you donate thank you so much for making a difference in Dia’s life.

If donating or praying isn't your thing and you need a great hairstylist Dias mom is awesome! She does my mom and I's hair! She works at Waterstone Salon, Contact:512-373-7546 and ask for Chelsa.
