My mom, Ann, had a hysterectomy in 2003 (which included removal of her ovaries). When she became ill this spring none of us had any idea what horrific surprise was coming our way.
My beautiful mother retired in April, to spend time with her only grandchild, the love of her life 1 year old Zachary. She had been a part time office cleaner, so there is no pension or benefits of retiring. Shortly after retiring, she became ill, horrific stomach pain, inability to eat, fatigue, the list is endless.
She followed up with a doctor's office at her family's insisting. After multiple tests, scans, and a significant hospital stay she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Yes, that's right, ovarian cancer and no ovaries.
At this point the cancer has progressed significantly with tumors noted on the "ovary", omentum, and liver. She is no longer unable to eat sufficiently to have the strength to live let alone fight. A PICC line has been placed and I (her daughter who is also a nurse) administer TPN everday to maintain her nutritional status.
At this point, she needs aggressive chemotherapy to hopefully beginning shrinking the tumors. She is in pain all the time, without relief by anything.
Since she retired, and is not 65 she is not eligible for medicare. She has to maintain her own insurance policy with costs over $800 a month. This does not cover copays, medicine, etc... It has been only 1 month and the bills are already flowing in.
My strong, wonderful mom who never asks for anything, is worrying about the medical bills that are coming in. She never asks for anything and is too proud to admit she needs help. I on the other hand am not. I need her to be strong and not worry about bills. She needs all her strength to go to fight the cancer no worry needlessly.
