On 9-12-2016 our mom went to the hospital with a migraine. She was in a lot of pain so the doctors ran some tests. On 9-13-2016 she was transferred to a specialty hospital for treatment of an infection. I was out of state when I got a call from my grandma saying I needed to get home immediately.
When I finally got to the hospital, my 3 other siblings were already there. My aunt grabbed me and took me to see my mother who (at this time) was under sedation to keep her calm.
At that time, we found out that our mom has cryptococcal (spinal) meningitis and that it had spread to her brain. For our mom it is a very serious condition. She is an immunosuppressant due to her kidney transplant in 2011. She had Preeclampsia during one of her pregnancies which wasn't monitored and caused kidney disease. This led to dialysis, which led to end stage renal failure, and ultimately, a kidney transplant from her best friend. After her transplant, she struggled to get a job. She had finally returned to work, then she got sick. The treatment for the meningitis has been known to be harsh on kidneys and we are unsure of the lasting effects on her kidney. It might end up leading to the need for another transplant.
She is a single mom of 4 kids with her first grandson on the way. Our mom has given up so much to raise her kids. She will not be able to work at all right now, which will cause financial difficulties.
Our mom spent almost 2 weeks in the icu. We are looking for support to help her pay her bills until she can return to work. Although she is home at this point, she is very weak and confused. Her recovery will take over a year and the effects of the diease could last the rest of her life. Any help is greatly appreciated.
