Physical Therapy in Ethiopia
Donation protected
Hey friends and family!
I am writing to tell you of an incredible opportunity I am taking part in during what is now the third and final year of my Doctor of Physical Therapy education at Regis University. I will be traveling to Ethiopia to participate in a 3-week immersion program in which I will provide physical therapy in local hospitals, assist in teaching part of a DPT curriculum at Addis Ababa University, and volunteer at Project Mercy in Yetebon.
Due to the many costs associated with this trip, including airfare, room and board, and medical supplies, which I must personally cover, I would be extremely grateful for any financial support you can provide.
I will primarily be working at Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, which provides free care to women with obstetric fistulas (a condition associated with childbirth that has been practically eliminated in the Western world, but fairly common in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia). As many of you may know, I am very passionate about Women's Health and Pelvic Floor issues in physical therapy, and the oppurtunity to work at this hospital was the primary reason I decided to participate in this immersion. I am also very excited about Regis's commitment to work within communtiy partnerships to create sustainable change in this area, as evidenced by their support of the first ever DPT curriculum in Ethiopia, as well as of Project Mercy, an organization which is committed to improving lives in one of the most impoverished parts of Ethiopia by strengthening the entire community's economy, literacy, and health.
I want to participate in this experience not only to share my knowledge with the patients I will work with in Ethiopia, but to help myself grow as a therapist and become better able to serve every patient I come across for the rest of my career. If you don't feel you can donate, I completely understand. Please share this post, and your positive thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes are also cherished and much appreciated.
Much love,
Amanda
