Get Robert's boat back out on Heiltsuk territory
Donation protected
Robert S. Johnson and his boat are an important part of food security and marine safety in Heiltsuk territory. While moored in Bella Bella, the Shawnamarie (pictured) was sunk by a punt tied to her that filled up with water. It wasn't Robert's fault. But he is now facing over $8,000 in engine repairs and approximately $3,000 to repair or replace his winch, downriggers, VHF radios and other navigation and safety gear.
Robert is a dedicated year-round harvester who provides healthy traditional foods to many families in Bella Bella. He is also an experienced first responder who has helped countless people on the Central Coast. Robert was one of the first on scene when the Nathan E. Stewart tanker barge went down at Gale Passage, and played a key role in the oil spill cleanup.
You may remember Robert from a major news story in 2013 when the Heiltsuk and neighbouring nations were fighting to assert their traditional hunting laws on their territory. Robert was the bear guardian who busted an NHL player who illegally shot and beheaded a young grizzly. Rob boarded the poachers' boat alone, capturing photos and DNA evidence that led to a conviction and fine for Clayton Stoner - and ultimately the end of grizzly bear trophy hunting on the coast.
Robert and his family have faced a series of tragedies and setbacks recently. The sinking of the Shawnamarie is too much on top of everything else. I am asking you to give what you can to get Robert back out on Heiltsuk waters as soon as possible, so he can continue his important work. Please donate here or e-transfer him directly at robert.sjohnson0323 at gmail dot com.
