Hello, my name is Jan Surrell and I am writing this for my dear friend Connie Raines. We are Physical Therapists who have known and worked together in Humboldt County for years. We are both employed at this time by St. Josephs hospital in Eureka, Ca., where we have learned to work with the strong values of life! Now it is our time to help our dear friend Connie who has Stage III peritoneal cancer (the lining of the abdomen). In 2015 she had abdominal surgery at Stanford where they "debulked" the Cancer, removing her spleen,part of the transverse colon and the fatty layer in the abdomen, ovaries and fallopian tubes. She then underwent chemotherapy treatments for 5 months. Amazingliy enough Connie returned to work to continue caring for patients and spreading her wonderful love and spirit!
In June 2016, after giving an amazing speech to the community/hospital on her Cancer experience, Connie was flown back to Stanford for another surgical procedure for a small bowel blockage. ( She helped raise thousands of $ for our Cancer Care Program) She presently is undergoing another 6 rounds of chemotherapy.
Along with undergoing treatments she continues to try to work as much as she can. She states she works for several reasons and number 1 is because she loves our profession and the patients we treat. "It is such a privilege yo have your health and be able to work". Now Connie is facing financial devastation, as all Cancer patients do. The cost of the blood thinner alone is over $800.00 per month, not counting the expense of the chemotherapy treatments. The last surgery in Stanford Connie was by herself as the cost of lodging and meals for family to stay was prohibited. As Connie says the good news is they have not lost their house!
