The 2020-2021 JETBLACH Cycling team is off to a strong start with 6 riders! Because of the cancellation of the 2020 Little 500, the team is on a mission to take the victory this spring. Below are Fall ITT results, important dates for Little 500 events, and an introduction to the riders. As an independent team, these donations are the only source of funding so your contributions are greatly appreciated! Please also see the video from coach Courtney Bishop, in his 13th year with our historic program.

Fun Fact: I rode almost 11,000 miles in 2020

Growing up in Indiana, I always knew I was going to eventually end up as a student at IU. After spending the first two years of college participating in Run Club, I knew I needed to find something I thought was worth putting 110% effort into. Thankfully, through run club I met Matt who introduced me to JETBLACH and gave me an opportunity that has truly changed my life. This team represents everything that I believe is most important: friends, family, dedication, hard work, and most importantly, having fun. The 2020 race being cancelled was nothing short of devastating, and I am extremely thankful for Will, Danny, Rob, David, and Matt for what they’ve done to pave the way for the 2021 team. The incredible support from Delta Tau Delta and JETBLACH alumni is not something that we take for granted. We are an incredibly driven group of guys, and I can promise we will get the job done in the 2021 Little 500.

Name: Rob Krahulik
Year: Senior
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
Major: Finance & Accounting
Fun Fact: I have a twin brother

My name is Rob Krahulik, and I am a returning senior with two prior races in 2018 and 2019. I was fortunate enough to join what some saw as a ragtag team in JETBLACH in 2020, and still more fortunate to ride the race as a rookie, and to attack in the 2019 race from 5 laps out. Although we came up short, I gained invaluable race experience, and am incredibly excited to return to the track with a potential race day team of 4 veteran riders. Last year, I, unfortunately, fell ill the week of the Spring Break and did not make a full recovery until the day of the race, so I got to ride unmarked. However, this year my fitness and focus have been unmatched as we look to dominate the field with 4 of the fittest riders on any team.

Name: Trent Hohenstreiter
Year: Junior
Hometown: Seymour, IN
Major: Neuroscience
Fun Fact: Laughing Planet is my favorite place to eat in Bloomington.

When I decided to transfer to Indiana University, I knew I wanted to race in the Little 500. I met with a few teams before I decided on JETBLACH. Little did I know it would turn into one of the best decisions of my life. I joined a team that is not only full of guys who have a good time but also train second to none. The dedication and drive of this team is exactly what I needed. It is a culture that started before JETBLACH with Delta Tau Delta. I look forward to adding onto the great base training we have been putting in since this summer. This is a group of guys that are going to go to work and the results will show in the spring. I cannot be more grateful to be a part of an established program with great riders. I love representing JETBLACH and look forward to making all involved proud.

Major: Entrepreneurship
Fun Fact: I have the worst JETBLACH tattoo on the team

Thanks to my dad (Delt alumni and veteran L5 rider Rob Hudson AKA Mr. Delt) the Little 500 has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I am extremely fortunate to have been around the Delts/ JETBLACH program from a very young age. I’ve always wanted to ride Little 500 and I was sold on Delts after they won in 2012 and 2016, but after their suspension I found myself somewhat lost looking for a new team. That changed when the JETBLACH guys welcomed me on with open arms. Since then the team continues to push me to work hard and has given me some much-needed advice. After the success of our fall ITTs I know this team can and will be successful in this year's race. We appreciate any and all support, making a L5 team successful takes monumental effort and being a newer independent team poses its own challenges as well.

Name: Josh Herbst
Year: Freshman

Major: Marketing
Fun Fact: When I arrived on campus, my longest ride to date was 35 miles

I came to IU knowing a fair amount about the Little 500, but had no intentions of riding or joining a team, at least for my first year- I wanted to experience the race as a spectator and learn some more before I joined a team or started training, especially because I had only begun riding in March when schools closed. However, while packing, I opted to leave my bike at home as I figured I wouldn't have the time for riding. About three weeks in, I grew tired of running or swimming every day and missed biking, so I brought my bike down, but still had little to no intention of riding. I was introduced to the team because my older brother knew my teammate Trent and that he was riding for a team. He suggested that I just go on a ride with the team and get a feel for it and hooked me up with Trent's number, and I went on a ride with a few of the guys. After hearing about some of the history and seeing firsthand how strong everyone else was (translation: I was in pain), I knew I had to be a part of it. I am very excited to put in hard work and contribute to the team's inevitable success.

Recap: The 69th Men’s Little 500, April 13th, 2019

In 2019 JETBLACH cycling raced 4 juniors, all of whom returned after the race for the 2020 season. With a promising start to the Spring season, the team placed 4 riders within the top 40 of the field in ITTs, with the same 4 moving on in MissNOut before it was canceled due to poor weather. Spring series closed with the team taking 4th place in a highly contested team pursuit field, and qualified in the 14th spot. All in all, it looked like a strong group of riders, able to hold any pace and looking to contest a sprint win if not animate the competition with a solo breakaway. Before the race, however, team captain and returning sprinter Robert Oehler fell ill with a stomach virus, casting some doubt over the teams dominant strategy. By the end of the week, it was still unclear how the team would make up for this stroke of bad luck, but the other three riders Danny Kurzendoerfer, Matt McGorrey, and David Gordon easily picked up the slack. Around lap 70 team Nicks English Hut and JETBLACH rolled off the front of the peloton together. Working together they were able to tempo to more than a half-lap lead. Unfortunately, the peloton realized the threat and began to work together to bring the two teams back. Soon the two riders sat up and went back to the lead group.  As the race came to a close Phi Psi made a daring attack off the front around lap 180. It looked like they were going to stay away and the chasing group would be sprinting for second. At the last moment, possible Phi Psi made an exchange and was swallowed up by the chasing group. Robert Oehler got on the bike at lap 192 to finish the race for JETBLACH. Weakened by the stomach bug, Rob's sprint did not unfold how we had imagined and Cutters took the win. It was another learning experience for all 4 riders.

Who was JETBLACH?

They were the founders of Delta Tau Delta’s Alpha Chapter at Bethany College and a single piece of history that Beta Alpha Delta Tau Delta have been taught for decades. We’ve borrowed the first letters of their last names to form JETBLACH. Their names were:

· Johnson, John C
· Earle, Alexander C
· Tarr, Eugene
· Bell, Henry K
· Lowe, Jacob S
· Alfred, Richard H
· Cunningham, William R
· Hunt, John LN

Thank you for your continued support and passion for Delta Tau Delta and the Little 500. Words cannot express how thankful we are to have the opportunity to carry on the Delta Tau Delta legacy that began before any of us were students at Indiana University, and we greatly appreciate anything you contribute to our team. As Courtney said, we no longer have access to the Delta Tau Delta training facilities, and we need your help. This team has an incredible work ethic and competitive attitude that is second to none, and we will give this race everything we have.
