3 Peaks Challenge to fund Alex's Rugby Wheelchair!

Donation protected
Sponsor recent amputee, Alex Thraxton (26), to climb the 3 tallest mountains in the UK (Snowden, Ben Nevis, and Scafell Pike) in aid of raising funds for a rugby wheelchair.

Alex's Story

Earlier this year, Alex underwent a below knee amputation of his left leg and foot. The surgery, that took place a few days before his 26th birthday, was the result of a 4 year long struggle. Complications that stemmed from a brain injury he acquired during a car accident, were the root cause of the issues.
Given the difficult choice between futher possible deteriation, and amputation, Alex elected for the surgery. What followed were a severely difficult few weeks as he made the first few steps toward recovery.

Prior to his surgery, Alex had been a keen player of the paralympic sport- wheelchair rugby. Or, 'murderball' as it was previously known.
Alex had gotten into the sport not long after his accident. At that time he was new to using a wheelchair in his daily life, and was looking for confidence and support- both of which he found in this sport, and his team mates at the Berkshire Banshees Wheelchair Rugby club.

Before his amputation, Alex played in a standard attack rugby chair- one of many generic chairs the club had to offer. This was fine when he had two legs, but now it's not properly safe to play in as he risks damage to his stump, which would be exposed during play.

The chair that Alex needs is one that has a custom made armoured plate around his legs in order to protect his residual limb. However, rugby wheelchairs don't come cheap, and a custom one can be in the range of 5-10 grand.

Thankfully, Alex's Rugby club has offered to donate £700 towards his new chair, which will help play for the fitting and deposit. However, we will need extra donations to be able to afford a new chair. Which is why we are asking you to help us fund a new customised rugby wheelchair for Alex!

The 3 Peaks Challange

To motivate others to donate, and to spread the word about our fundraiser, Alex has decided he would like to attempt the Three Peaks Challenge. That is, climbing the three tallest mountains in the United Kingdom.

Alex does not yet even have a prosthetic leg, so the road to this achievement will be a long one. It will also be an immense personal achievement to Alex, and a symbol of his determination to overcome his injury, and his amputation.

Alex intends to share as much as possible of the journey leading up to each expedition. This includes milestones like learning to walk, getting his first prosthetic leg, and managing his first hike.

He intends to start with the smallest of the mountains, Scafell Pike, and then Snowden, and finally ending with Nevis.

Thank-you

Words cannot explain how greatful we are for anyone who chooses to sponsor Alex. Even £1 will help, we have a massive goal to reach, and every penny is appreciated. We look forward to sharing our journey with you, and ask that you please share this around as much as possible!
