Jasper saw the vet and we did not receive the news we had hoped for. His hip has redislocated and as a result he will need an FHO surgery estimated at ~$2000. We have scheduled him to receive this surgery for May 29, 2023, but we need donations to make this happen! Please share if you cannot donate.

On Saturday, April 29th we were contacted by the local animal control about an American Bulldog who had fallen out of a 3rd story window and had a suspected broken back leg. Unfortunately, this boy had been bounced around to 3 different people in the 6 weeks leading up to the incident so the person who had just taken him in that night surrendered him on the spot. Knowing we are lovers of American Bulldogs here at Taffy's (Taffy was an American Bulldog), they contacted us immediately to collaborate and see if we would be interested in taking him into our rescue. In the meantime they spent the day finding an emergency vet to see him, however, given the current veterinary crisis it literally took all day. Once they finally found a vet to see him it was determined that his leg was not actually broken, however, he did experience a complete dislocation of his right hind leg, meaning the hip was completely out of the socket. Unfortunately, there wasn't a vet on staff who was able to reset the leg and Jasper was sent home for the weekend on pain medication. He came into our care Saturday evening at 11pm.

He spent most of Sunday resting on pain medication and we waited anxiously for the vet to open Monday morning. First thing his morning we contacted our vets and they agreed to see him. They confirmed that not only was his hip dislocated, but he also had a broken toe on the opposite hind foot so it was no wonder that this guy was in some serious pain. They explained to us that they could reset the leg, however, it only has a 50% chance of remaining in the socket and the longer it remains out of the socket, the less likely resetting it will work. In the event that he dislocates it again, he will need a FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy - https://vcacanada.com/know-your-pet/femoral-head-ostectomy-fho-in-dogs). They also said that we could opt to go straight to this option given the length of time the leg had already been dislocated.

We opted to have the vets reset the leg and are hoping that Jasper's leg heals without him dislocating it again. Unfortunately for Jasper this means 100% crate rest for the next 10-14 days, not even potty breaks outside and then very limited mobility for an additional 4 weeks. As such we will need supplies to ensure he stays clean and healthy while he is in recovery (puppy pads, cleaning supplies etc.).

The initial vetting at the emergency vet was covered by Animal Control, however, today's vetting as well as any ongoing vetting will be covered by Taffy's Legacy Canine Rescue & Rehabilitation. We will update the fundraiser if there are any changes in his medical needs, but at present we are praying to the dog gods that Jasper makes a full recovery without needing surgery. The initial fundraising goal reflects today's vetting and a small budget for puppy pads/supplies for Jasper.
