Maki's Trip to Brydges Centre, Kenya

I'm Maki Love, a rising sophomore at The College of Wooster in Ohio. I plan to double major in Africana Studies and Sociology or Education. My dream is to educate and advocate for children in Africa who do not have the resources to do it themselves. God has given me a special place in my heart for the children in Africa.

This summer, I have an opportunity to volunteer at Brydges Centre in Kenya. I learned about the Brydges Centre through a program I was involved in during high school, called Honors Mentor Connection. Dr. Johannsen, a cardiologist at Hennepin County Medical Center, was my mentor. He introduced me to the Brydges Centre and inspired me to look further into it.

The Brydges Centre's philosophy states, "We exist to bring positive change in lives of orphaned and vulnerable children through community participation and empowerment, rehabilitation, provision of basic needs and advancement of childrens rights in an empowering and dignified manner".

The mission of the Bridges Centre is to provide shelter for orphaned and poor children in Kenya. They also strive to provide a future for the children as well as the country they were born into by education and the Gospel Message. They hope to create future leaders in these children who previously had gray futures. While there, I will be assisting the children in their education and helping them grow in their faith. With the funds I raise, aside from the program fees, I will be purchasing Bibles, school supplies, and any other needed items.

My life verse is Proverbs 31:25 "She dresses in strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future." God has guided my future to this point and continues to as I go forward. I have faith and trust in him to take me where I need to be. I am excited to put my dreams into action this summer.
