Judie Burrows passed away on January 30, 2020, succumbing to complications from the injuries she suffered in 2009 in a routine partial hip replacement that left her in a coma with permanent brain damage.
Post coma, despite relentless pain and suffering, Judie fought everyday of the next decade to get her life back and receive medical and legal justice.
Her ferocious battle was featured in the award-winning, critically acclaimed HBO documentary film BLEED OUT. Seen by millions, Judie’s feisty fearlessness and singular sense of humor inspired thousands of similar victims and families of medical error to continue to fight. Judie became the voice of the voiceless.
Judie's journey and its clarion message - that medical error is the third leading cause of death in America - has become a wake up call-to-action. BLEED OUT recently screened in Washington DC for members of Congress. Doctors, hospitals and universities across the country have made the film part of their teaching curriculum, stating Judie’s story and her courage are literally saving lives.
Donations made in Judie's honor will help carry forward her work and legacy in raising awareness in the patient safety movement that now bears her name #WeStandWithJudie.
Your contribution and generosity will go toward...
• Educating doctors, nurses, hospitals, medical providers and health care organizations on patient safety and the consequences of not being honest, accountable and transparent when something goes wrong - with emphasis from the patient and family point of view.
• Educating the public by shining a harsh light on the Medical Industrial Complex - especially regarding medical error.
• Working with legislators to pass patient-centered legislation to protect the rights of all patients - federal, state and local.
• Advocating for full transparency and accountability in hospitals eg: black boxes in operating rooms, surgical checklists, having actual bedside ICU doctors in the ICU (as opposed to camera doctors offsite i.e. the EICU)...
• Working with health care rating organizations like The Leapfrog Group so patients and their families can become better informed health care consumers.
• Advancing all the above by sharing Judie's story BLEED OUT far and wide.
• Fiercely promoting the Holy Grail Tenets of Health Care - especially when medical errors occur. Accountability. Transparency. Apology. Financial Restitution. Ownership.
