Campaign Update: Matching Donation to Launch our SHE Kindness School Program

Your support will be matched through a generous $3,500 grant from the Leuthold Family Foundation. You can play a key role in our raising the remaining $5,200 so that we reach our next $10,000 goal through our SHE Kindness GoFundMe and launch our groundbreaking SHE Kindness School Program  that will reach students in 20 schools nationwide, 10 of which will be in under-served communities.

The School Program will inform, inspire and engage students, teachers, staff, administrators and parents to bring about sustainability, health, equity and kindness in their school, home and community. We seek to:

- Empower students to overcome “climate anxiety” and hopelessness to engage and take action for sustainability, health, equity and kindness
- Create a new generation of sustainability leaders by training and paying our dedicated college interns from across the country to present and facilitate SHE Kindness in grades 6-12, as well as guide SHE Kindness efforts in their own schools, hometowns and future workplaces

Who We Are

The Alliance for Sustainability (www.afors.org) was created nearly forty years ago by visionary leaders from around the world with a mission to co-create sustainability on a personal, organizational, and planetary level.

What is Sustainability?

We developed one of the first definitions of sustainability back in 1983:  ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane, embodying our highest values in terms of how we treat people, animals and the planet. We have always seen sustainability from a holistic, integrative perspective that embodies all aspects of life and incorporates health, equity, kindness, culture, regeneration, and so much more.

Sustainability provides a clear yet ever evolving and inspiring North Star and vision of the world we’d like to create that is yet to be fully realized. We see sustainability as an umbrella term that incorporates a range of powerful, cutting-edge approaches, including regeneration, restoration, resilience, circular economy, Cradle to Cradle, UN Sustainable Development Goals, Permaculture, Biomimicry, Net Zero, organic, Natural Step and so many more. Consequently, we fully support these initiatives and seek to have them become widely adopted.

The Challenges We All Face

We now face a new world in the wake of a global pandemic, racial injustice, climate disasters and threats to democracy. These challenges raise a big question: Is it possible to bring about transformation and fundamental systems change to co-create a world of sustainability, health, equity and kindness?

A Powerful Solution

Our answer is YES! While the challenges we face can appear overwhelming, we feel they present tremendous new opportunities given the accompanying shift in public awareness and support for long-needed, fundamental systems change. We must begin by transforming ourselves and all institutions by confronting racism, sexism and all other isms while collaborating on campaigns and policies that will bring the tipping points for fundamental systems change. To succeed will require diverse groups to work together to co-create innovative ways of thinking and acting. Fortunately, there is a growing community of leaders, nonprofits, social enterprises, and public bodies who have the expertise, wisdom and commitment to accomplish this.

While it is daunting, we are energized by the invitation to explore what is emergent and what is needed to be birthed to transform our world using our open-hearted center of deep listening, empathy and collaboration.  Building upon our nearly 40 years of our pioneering work to make sustainability mainstream and co-creating strong, successful alliances, we have spent a great deal of time strategizing and planning.

We have developed a bold, positive and impactful approach for co-creating a new world through a Campaign for Sustainability, Health, Equity and Kindness, which we refer to as our SHE Kindness Campaign. We believe it can transform our world and create an abundant, healthy, and equitable future of true sustainability.

SHE Kindness Campaign Goals

The Goal of the SHE Kindness Campaign is to support personal and institutional transformation, fundamental policy shifts and systems change. We will educate, engage and inspire more than one million diverse people and groups to action on everything from lifestyle and consumption to campaigns and policy changes.

This Campaign will be powered by diverse young people and utilize the latest, cutting edge technologies and approaches, including inspiring, impactful and paradigm-shifting videos, social media engagement, blogs, podcasts, a dynamic, interactive website, a short book and other publications, presentations, workshops, trainings and collaboration with Alliance partners on targeted campaigns and public policies.

Our GoFundMe: Key Deliverables of Phase One of Our SHE Kindness Campaign

Our GoFundMe campaign will provide the base for Phase One of our SHE Kindness Campaign, which is essential to provide the foundation for the rest of the SHE Kindness Campaign. It has four components:

1. Business Presentations

We’ll take our powerful and impactful presentations on sustainability, health, equity and kindness to 20 businesses and corporations of all sizes, including Fortune 500 corporations such as Apple and Target, who we have begun working with. This will engage employees in our efforts, have them commit to at least one sustainability action and begin the process of building business support and shifting corporate practices and culture.

2.  School Presentations

We’ll make presentations to 20 diverse schools, including at least 10 that are in under-served communities. This will energize young people, have them commit to at least one sustainability action and engage them and their schools to actively participate in the Campaign and start co-creating Students for Sustainability.

3.  Public Policies and Campaigns

We’ll work with our allied partners to successfully support 10 public policies and high-impact campaigns targeting key tipping points for sustainability, health, equity and kindness. These policies and campaigns will create a vibrant green economy, infrastructure and jobs while addressing climate change, discrimination, LGBTQ, women’s and minority rights, access to decent housing, healthcare and education, gun violence, humane treatment of animals, voting rights, campaign finance reform and protections to our democracy.

4.  Declaration of Co-Creation and Interdependence

We’ll build broad support from more than 1,000 people and institutions for our recently-released Declaration of Co-Creation and Interdependence, a bold and inspiring call to action.

Our Campaign Goals

We can accomplish all four of these major impacts over the next year if we reach our minimum goal of raising $10,000 in our GoFundMe Campaign. All of the funds will be used to cover the costs for the SHE Kindness Campaign staff and interns who will lead the effort.

However, our larger goal is to raise more than $25,000 so we can provide more presentations, engage additional people, pass more policies and create the essential infrastructure needed to grow the Campaign for the next phases, including videos, social media, adequate staff and organizational support.

We Need Your Help to Accomplish This

We hope you will want to learn more and make a difference by contributing to our GoFundMe Campaign. And check out the great gifts you can get below.

Together we can co-create a new world of sustainability, health, equity and kindness. Please join us in making this vision a reality.

We Can Do This! Our History of Big Accomplishments

Although the Alliance is a small non-profit, we’ve always partnered with a wide range of other groups to achieve big things. Our first act was to pass legislation establishing the toughest organic standards in the US.

In the wake of the Exxon Valdez oil disaster in Alaska, we partnered with leading environmental groups, socially responsible investors, religious institutions, organized labor and, the pension funds for the City of New York and the State of California to create the CERES Principles, the first ever corporate environmental responsibility agreement. They were signed by numerous major corporations who changed their practices.

We then worked with more than 100 NGOs to get all 179 countries attending the UN Earth Summit in Rio to adopt sustainable agriculture as a goal.

Our Team
