Caring For Coates

Donation protected

Hi Everyone!  I am Kim Carpenter, a long-time friend of David Coates and his family. We have shared many fun times at the pool, at the golf course, working on various fundraisers in the community, and cheering on the UNC Tarheels.

2020 was extremely hard on David. He was the Director of Communications for a church in Myrtle Beach and due to Covid-19 his position was eventually dissolved. David applied for unemployment insurance twice through the CARES Act and was not able to collect any unemployment benefits.  He found himself without any income as well as no benefits (specifically health insurance).   David did not let it get his spirits down!  He was able to land some freelance jobs to make ends meet.  Fast forward to November 2020, he noticed some swelling in his abdomen. He thought it may be a result of his diet. But as days went on there was a steady decline and he ended up in the ER where he had fluid drained (Paracentesis). In true David fashion, he hoped for the best and thought that would alleviate the discomfort. Typical 2020, that was not the case and he ended up back in the ER on December 28th for a second paracentesis.  His Dr. scheduled an appointment the following week for bloodwork, etc. David was diagnosed with Liver Disease (Unfortunately, Liver Disease runs in his family) David was referred to Duke University Hospital and his appointment is Wednesday, January 13th for his next steps. At this stage there is no cure for his Liver Disease and the Gastroenterology Dr. he met with in Myrtle Beach mentioned he may be facing a Liver Transplant in the coming months.

While David should be enjoying life at the beach & spending time with family, he is now facing a different future.  With his family, friends, and God by his side, David is ready to tackle this disease head-on and fight with everything he has.   But, he and his family need more than prayers.

David needs financial assistance now to help pay medical bills and to help during this challenging time.  Each time he’s underwent a paracentesis (fluid drain at the ER) the cost was in excess of $5,000. All of the funds received through this fundraiser will go for medical expenses ONLY which are being managed by his Mother, Darlene.

David is a strong man with a lot of fight in him.  We believe that God will protect him and make him well. He is one of the kindest and most respectful men around and he needs our help. Just a few short years ago David led a powerful fundraising campaign for his brother Chuck Coates who was battling Hodgkin Lymphoma. (David was also his bone marrow donor which saved Chuck’s life.) David has also worked closely with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in granting wishes for children, Homeless Outreach, 2019 Global 6k for Water, Myrtle Beach as well as other community outreach.  It is now time that we show David the support that he has so freely given to others.

Any contribution you are able to provide is greatly appreciated. Join #Caring4Coates. Thank you.
