Senior Service Project

Donation protected

Everybody knows that kids love animals, however the amount of money we spend on our pets has nearly doubled in the past 10 years, rising to more than $38 billion, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. The problem that I have noticed from being a certified pet handler at the humane society, is that many families cannot afford to have a pet. The Humane Society is charging sometimes $250+ per dog, and $50 for a kitten, and I have seen many families come in with their children to purchase a pet, but see the price and have to explain to their child that they cannot afford it. The $200 is a good deal however because it does cover the cost for spaying and neutering, and basic vaccinations, but it does not cover the cost of healthy food, vet bills, a bed, treats, toys, etc. Even if families can afford the initial cost of an animal, the rising cost of everything they need to live a happy and healthy lifestyle at home is steadily increasing.

My goal in life is to help families create positive lifelong memories. For my Senior project I will do this by purchasing and accepting donations of food, treats, blankets, leashes, and pretty much anything a family might need who are taking home their first pet. I am asking for help purchasing the items I will need in my animal care packages. I will take the time to put together care packages with the donated items, or the items I purchase and these care packages will go home with families who purchase a dog or cat. I am also asking family and friends for donations in fabric, and will also be purchasing some of my own. With this fabric I will be hand making tie blankets for the care packages so the animals have something soft to lay on when they arrive at their new home. I have made blankets for the humane society before, but all of these blankets stay at the Humane Society to be used for animals to lay on at the facility.

The amount of money we spend on our pets has nearly doubled in the past 10 years, and unfortunately too many pets are not provided with the essentials because of this rising cost. With my care packages, more pets in my community will be provided with healthier food, toys, treats, warm blankets, and a loving family. My goal is $800 because one bag of healthy dog food alone cost roughly $30, and it is my goal to supply atleast 20 families with the care packages I put together with any generous donation of $ or materials.
