On January 14, 2016, I was in my classroom when the news came. “Have you heard about Jackson?” the student asked. To be honest, I thought the student was joking. This was the same Jackson who I have known since Elementary school when he and my daughter were in the same class together. The same Jackson I had taught Freshman year; and Junior year; and now again in his Senior year. The same Jackson who had two teeth knocked out a few weeks previous during a basketball practice. But it was true. This sweet boy who I have known since he was in 5th grade had his world, and his siblings’ world turned upside-down overnight. On January 13, 2016, Jackson’s dad, Jason, died suddenly of heart failure as a result of years of addiction. And in an instant, Jackson’s life, his mom’s life, and his brothers’ and sister’s lives were forever altered.
Less than a week later, my principal entered my classroom with Jackson in tow, and asked if he could take my class so Jackson could talk with me. As I sat across from Jackson over the next two hours, he poured his heart out – the fear, the pain and the sorrow were palpable. I have often felt as a teacher that God has placed me where I am for very specific times, and for very specific reasons; now is one such time.
It is with my whole heart that I ask you to consider helping Jackson (18), his mom, Tami, and his siblings, Taylor (age 20), Ashton (age 10) and Averie (age 8). To be real, there was no life insurance; Jason’s addiction caused so much pain and destruction, and he left no plan in place. Tami already has been working two jobs, and they have been living paycheck to paycheck. Without Jason’s income, they do not have the means to pay their mortgage and other bills; the family is in desperate need of financial help. At this point, Tami is doing everything she can to provide for Ashton, Averie, and Jackson, but it doesn’t scratch the surface of what they need. Any amount, big or small can and will make a difference in the life of this family. May God use us to support them during this time.
