Support Sunnydale Village Sanctioned Encampment
Donation protected
Sunnydale Village is a sanctioned encampment that offers a safe place for people to go who are experiencing homelessness in Burien. Burien currently offers no shelter for the vast majority of unhoused people in our community, and the city recently passed a "camping ban," criminalizing homelessness and targeting people for having basic survival gear such as a tent or even a blanket in public spaces. With the implementation of this new law, the need for a safe space for our unhoused neighbors has become more urgent than ever. Displacing, or "sweeping", unhoused individuals creates new risks to their health and safety, often leaving them without the essentials they need to survive, and disconnecting them from vital support networks such as case managers and family members. This new law taking effect as we enter the cold season and temperatures drop dangerously low only makes the situation more dire for our neighbors in crises. Several unhoused people have died on the streets of Burien just within the last year, and those numbers are likely to increase without direct action.
Seeing the need in our city, the Burien Community Support Coalition (BCSC) has partnered with Oasis Home Church to open the first sanctioned encampment in Burien, known as Sunnydale Village. BCSC is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization made up of volunteers in our community who believe we must work together to support our most vulnerable populations. Through donations from individuals, businesses, and other organizations, BCSC opened and has been operating the Sunnydale Village encampment since November 6th. The goal of BCSC is to be able to provide essentials to residents of Sunnydale Village, including food, tents, sleeping bags, warm clothing, basic hygiene items, first aid supplies, etc. The ability to provide these necessities is based solely on the generosity of our community. With hard enforcement of the "camping ban" beginning on December 1st, we anticipate a rapid influx of new residents coming into Sunnydale Village, and a significant increase in the need for supplies. By making a donation today, you can help ensure Sunnydale Village remains stocked with these important items as the resident population grows. Your donation will make an immediate difference in the lives of people in our community by keeping them warm, fed, safe and healthy.
Thank you for any support you can offer! Sunnydale Village is also always looking for new volunteers, and donations of items such as used clothing (jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves, socks, warm shoes, etc.) can be dropped off at our front desk at any time. You can sign up to volunteer and learn more about donating at Buriencsc.org!
Donations to the Burien Community Support Coalition 501(c)(3) and Sunnydale Village are tax deductible (EIN: 93-1689183). Please contact [email redacted] with any questions, or to request a receipt for your donation.
