A Final Farewell for Esi Coleman Obeng-Darko

Esi Coleman Obeng-Darko, our son-in-law’s mother, came to the U.S. from Accra, Ghana two weeks ago to visit her children and explore potential medical options. Complications occurred, life saving measures attempted, but tragically she did not survive. She passed into eternal life Tuesday, November 28, 2023 in Des Moines, Iowa.

She was a wife, mother, gramma, friend, mommy, auntie, boss, and entrepreneur. Her short 61-year-life was full of compassion, care, welcome and service to others. She would go above and beyond to help anyone and everyone while bringing an unmatched joy and strength for life to all she met. Whether she was first meeting you or had known you her entire life, you could always count on being met with a warm, genuine smile that quickly reminded you everything is better when done together.

Her home is Ghana, and she deserves to be celebrated there.

Her family, friends, co-workers, and community need a proper burial, memorial, and an opportunity to mourn her unexpected passing.

Currently, the largest obstacle preventing this from happening is finances. Medical expenses, transportation costs, legal fees, funeral expenses, and additional travel logistics shouldn’t be what stops Esi from returning home.

Many have asked “how can we help?” Please consider honoring the life, memory, and legacy of our Dear Esi, taken far too soon, with a financial contribution. Every bit counts as this feat requires thousands of dollars upfront to even begin. Prayers are welcomed as this sudden, tragic event affected so many.
