In the early hours of 27 March 2022, the house Cipheramnesia and I share burned. There was a gas leak, Cipher was in hospital for almost two weeks in a coma with severe burns, but she was the only casualty in the household. Our two human companions are fine, and the three cats are mostly fine, even the lightly singed Edelweiss. and from that point what should have been the worst moment proved to be only the beginning of the chaos and misery of the last two years.
I hired a contractor to repair the damage, the only one I could find available at the time. At first they worked diligently, but a few months in they stopped showing up regularly. I tried to replace them, and still found any well reviewed contractors were booked several years in advance.
So we hired a lawyer instead. It seemed to work at first, but in the end the only possible result is that we will be bringing the contractor to court. They took almost $150,000, and did about 30,000 of work. I found a new one, and he is actually working. However, he discovered that the previous contractor had done about 100,000 worth of damage to the structure. Mainly by removing the roof and some of the upper walls, and then leaving it open to the elements for half a year. The porch, once the siding was removed, was found to be rotting, and had to be replaced. And this drove the price up rapidly.
The lawyer was supposed to be pressuring the first contractor's insurance, but he got into a car accident and broke his neck. He is healing, but it means that money we expected to be in place hasn't been gathered as he was unable to actually do the work required.
I have emptied my small retirement fund, Cipher has depleted hers, and we are out of other options and still coming up short. The funds I am hoping for here will go to the last bit of external rebuilding (the interior is another story and will be waiting a bit), and paying lawyer fees.
If you can help, please, please do.
