3D History For Ukraine

THE PROJECT
This crowdfunding project aims to gain funds to purchase an Artec 3D handheld scanner, that will be immediately used for 3D documentation of Ukrainian cultural heritage objects. After being used by leading Ukrainian scholars trained in the application of digital technologies for cultural heritage documentation, the scanner will be transferred to one of the leading Ukrainian historical museums. This will save many pieces of unique data from our past and ensure a brighter future.
WHY NOW?
The current stage of the Ukrainian—Russian war that intensified on 24th February 2022 emphasised the weakest facets of Ukrainian archaeology and archaeological heritage preservation issues: the low level of digital recording and a poor material base to provide this kind of recording. While every Ukrainian city is being shelled almost every day, the constant jeopardy of losing the unique archaeological heritage objects persist. Some objects, i.e. the collection of unique Scythian golden artifacts, have already been stolen. Others, like the famous rock art complex of Kamyana Mohyla, are endangered and is currently occupied by the Russian army. This forces us to search for a practical solution that will arm Ukrainian archaeologists with particular tools to provide the digital preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage objects in its uncertain time.
The high velocity of 3D recording and its high accuracy makes Artecs 3D handheld laser scanning technology a suitable option for the project. The fast and accurate recording of 3D data creates huge digital data storage issues. Unfortunately, this kind of solution is not presented in Ukraine, which slows our efforts for the digital recording of endangered heritage objects. There is no need to say, this is needed here urgently: right now, this will push the intensity of cultural heritage preservation efforts in Ukraine to a completely different level while, in the long run affecting the quality of the archaeological record in Ukraine.
