3D Printed Masks for Whatcom Healthcare Workers

Donation protected
I am raising money to produce 3D printed masks for healthcare workers in Whatcom County.

Cost breakdown:

3D Printer-$300

Basic Plastic Mask (Material)-$1

Antimicrobial Plastic Mask (Material)-$5

Filtration Material (30 Uses)-$2

With the pandemic of COVID-19 rapidly spreading, there is the threat of a shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers. In Whatcom County, many hospitals have projected that they will run out of masks at the end of the week. I have been working with a full-time nurse in Whatcom County on 3D printing reusable masks as an alternative to N95 masks.

These masks are printed, then thermoformed to fit and seal each user’s face. Filtration materials and straps are then added to make these masks useable and similar to an N95 mask. Although they are not certified as N95 masks, they have been designed to similar standards and can be used in the event of N95 masks being unavailable. The filters can be replaced and the mask can be sanitized and reused. The design is open source and was created by Copper3D (see below link).

The goal is to provide healthcare workers with 3 masks each so they can rotate and sanitize them. Each mask takes 4 hours to print. My single printer can only produce 4-5 masks per day. To ramp up production, we need to purchase multiple printers. A new printer with the required accessories costs $300. The material for masks is also a cost. A basic plastic mask uses $1 of plastic filament. A mask with the antimicrobial copper infused filament (sold out) uses $5 of filament. A sheet of filtration material (approx. 30 filters) costs $2. There are also costs for sealant material and elastic straps.

All donated funds will go to purchasing printers and materials and printers to effectively produce these masks for health care workers. The time to produce these masks is being donated. The funds will simply help to cover materials. All printers purchased with donated funds will be donated to schools and/or maker spaces to further 3D printing and engineering education.

If you are interested in purchasing your own 3D printer to produce masks, please contact me and I will help you set it up.

These are difficult times, so please only donate if you have the means. If you have any further questions, please contact me and I am more than happy to answer.
