3D Printed PPE for Healthcare Workers: COVID-19
Donation protected
We at Augment Bionics are making and donating face shields to hospitals around the UK.
Augment Bionics is an early stage student-run start-up focused on building high functioning and affordable 3D printed prosthetics for transradial amputees and individuals with below-elbow limb differences.
We know that 3D printing can change lives.
That's why, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK, we began to 3D print and donate essential protective medical equipment in response to national shortages. Now, we are using injection moulding to achieve the same goal but at a hugely increased capacity - a jump from 1,000 to 10,000 shields per week. This will enable us to officially supply NHS and governmental bodies around the UK which are experiencing shortages.
Medical staff in the UK are experiencing shortages of certain personal protective equipment such as face shields, surgical masks, respirators and goggles. This is happening due to the overwhelming number of patients being treated in addition to globally disrupted supply chains of such equipment. As we can see with the tragic deaths of doctors in the past couple of weeks, this gap in PPE supply costs lives.
We will be supporting medical staff by rapidly manufacturing the necessary PPE and distributing it to hospitals in the UK. Primarily, this will be through printing face shields, which we have the capacity to manufacture up to the necessary standards. The design we are using (see below) was made by Prusa Research. It has already been verified by the Czech Ministry of Health and is currently being implemented worldwide.
The increase in our asking amount from £20,000 to £35,000 reflects our hugely increased capacity, and we ask so that we can make the most of our new tool.
We can manufacture even more if our goal is exceeded, and every donation helps us help those at high risk.
With your help, we can do our part in protecting our true heroes.
