3d-Printed Face Shields for the NHS
I have been living in the East Midlands for 2.5 years now and I have had the benefit of having access to the world's greatest healthcare system, the NHS. So when the COVID-19 crisis broke out and I learned my local hospital was out of personal protective equipment, I got in contact with their head of health & safety and offered to help. I told her I could provide around 30 face shields, free of charge, every day, by keeping my two printers running nearly 24/7. She thanked me, said that would be an amazing help as they are down to just goggles, and then quietly asked if I could buy more printers... That is where gofundme came into the picture.
I have the space and the experience to run a small print farm for the hospital and local surgeries, but I do not have the cash on hand when it is needed - i.e. right now. This campaign is intended to raise enough funds to buy and run five 3D printers for one month, which will increase my PPE output to over 100 units/day, every single PPE item going to a healthcare worker in need.
Cost breakdown:
5 x 3D printers (Anycubic Mega S) = £995.00
3 x Work benches to put them on = £125.92
20 x PLA+ filament = £379.80
Electricity (~£1/day/printer) = £150
Plugs/leads/tools = £34.95
Total = £1,685.67
There is no guesswork in this, this is not an attempt to do something new for me. I've been 3d printing for several years, and I've already handed over my first batch of PPE to the hospital staff. I just need your help to ramp up production so I can get more PPE in the hands of more people who need it. Every penny raised will directly go to printing more PPE - if the campaign exceeds the £1,686 I am asking for, all excess funds will go to purchasing more printers and more filament to scale up PPE production even more.
Help me help the NHS!
