Illumination Celebration Aug 30th

Creative youth are undisciplined, yet they have so much to offer. That is why we have spent the summer teaching them about the process of film making and editing. They refined their craft by creating short videos highlighting the positive aspects about themselves. We hope that by teaching them how to communicate and express themselves that we can defeat the negative stereotypes that are often portrayed about them, specifically youth of color. These videos will be shown along side live performances.
Local youth will be presenting a showcase of Spoken Word, Comedy, Live Music, and short films produced by them! This event was created as a partnership between community agencies Spotlight, 4-H Metro, Build Programs Not Jails, and Undercut Collective.
While these videos are being performed, there will be a talented group of teenagers showcasing their talents. With the help of local filmmaker Jon Iseburg, we interviewed these talented teenagers of color and built a narrative that is part of a larger conversation on race, racism and cultural challenges. We are really impressed with the passion and frank perspectives of the students as they shared their experiences and hopes for social change.
We have also brought on board Urbana High School student Saskia Baker, the creator of Undercut Collective, as a lead on the event planning. The Undercut Collective is a program concentrating on putting together all-ages concerts for the teens of the Champaign-Urbana area that was started by Saskia over a year ago.
We have been generously met with businesses that are willing to reduce the cost of services to help make this happen, however, we could use your support to cover the costs of this event. We are only seeking funding to cover the cost of the event and anything you can contribute will matter.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and giving spirit.
