Makindye Mothercare Primary School

I am raising funds to help support Makindye Mothercare Primary School, based in Kampala, Uganda, Makindye Mothercare has 45 pupils aged from 8-21, 7 staff (3 being volunteers and ex-pupils) and a wide range of potential to develop and nurture. Many children are coming from low income families and unfortunate situations, it is the dedicated staff who do their best to make sure that these children are educated to the very best of their ability and help them unlock their potential especially with regards to the many challenges facing the students, with many pupils having disjointed educations, starting school late or coming from extremely unfortunate circumstances there is a wide age range that attend the school with the oldest students being 21. With the school day starting at 8am and finishing at 6pm (with older classes finishing later in the night), the pupils work extremely hard to make sure they pass their years, the staff working even harder to push the pupils and not only educate them, but to teach them life skills through discipline and respect. With the level of potential at the school, it is limited by a restrictive budget that even sees the staff financially supporting tuition fees at certain times, for this reason I would like to help financially support the school and ask that you do the same. Ideally, with the funds raised, £800 (3,600,000 shillings) will go to buying a new septic tank and refurbishing the toilets, as they are in a bad state and are over 20 years old. Secondly, equipment and supplies are needed, at £2 (9,000 shillings) a piece, a pupil will be able to have a new counterbook to write in, as these are expensive supplies the extra support will be of massive help. The classrooms need refurbishing, repainting and new posters to ensure the children have a nice learning environment that they will enjoy coming to even more than they already do. Also, as seen by the photos the outside areas would ideally need renovating and turning into play areas, the pupils have expressed interest in getting into performing arts (music and drama) as these are useful skills in the Ugandan job market and give the children a chance to express themselves that they may not be able to at home.

£2000 is the ideal goal as that will completely renovate the school and change the lives of the students for many more generations to come, I have provided the girls with reusable sanitary pads and the majority of the boys with counterbooks but there is still much more to be done. With the money in Uganda stretching much further than many other places in the world, even the smallest donations would be maximised and go extremely far. I will ensure that all funds will be accounted for and you will be able to see how you have personally helped the school.
