Save the Farms Flood Fund
Thursday, July 4th The Painted Tulip Flower Farm flooded! I started a fund to rebuild my soil structure, which lost: compost, fertilizer and straw. In just a week, friends and neighbors came to my aid to help me reach our goal of $1,200. I was inspired by how quickly my community came to my aid, but I also reflected on how devastating this would have been without their support.
I want to expand this project to give to other Vermont Farms that have been affected by flooding, and keep money on reserve for future similar disasters farmers in Vermont face.
My goal is to create a fund that can offer immediate funds for Vermont vegetable and flower farmers who experience loss due to flooding, allowing farmers to return to their fields as quickly as possible. Much of the funding currently available in situations like this come in the form of loans that just create stress for farmers who now think: "Will I be able to pay this back?" My goal is to take a bit of the immediate stress off the farmer and get them on their feet doing what they do best...Growing!
We are currently working on turning this into a nonprofit fund, allowing us to ask for larger donations from Vermont companies. Longterm, I would also like to be able to extend funding to small scale flower farmers elsewhere in the U.S. who are members of The Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers.
We are still collecting from the public and every dollar counts.
Everyone working on this project is volunteering their time and energy.
How can you give?
