Help Levi walk again

Hi, we are the family and friends of Levi Dewey. We are fundraising to help Levi walk again!

Levi was a fit, fun, healthy 20 year old living his best life until the 7th of December 2022 when he was rushed into Royal Derby hospital suffering with breathing difficulties and flu like symptoms.

His condition rapidly deteriorated as he went into septic shock and multi organ failure. The cause of this was later found to be Influenza B and Pneumococcal Pneumonia.

He continued to deteriorate on Derby ITU and was therefore transferred to Glenfield hospital in Leicester to receive ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and full organ support. The doctors said Levi was the sickest patient in the country at that time and was given less than a 30% chance of surviving. He was on the maximum support they could offer.

Levi spent 20 days on ECMO, 14 of which he was in an induced coma, fighting this severe infection and the odds were very much against him. His organ support was gradually weaned and after 31 days he was taken off the ventilator and his body was no longer reliant on machines.

However he still now faces many challenges.

On the 9th January he was moved back to Derby for his ongoing care and on the 11th January Levi was informed that due to the severity of the sepsis, he requires bilateral below knee amputation of his legs.

The surgery is planned for the 24th of January….2 days before Levi turns 21 years old.

Despite this news, Levi remains optimistic about his future . He is so grateful to be alive after these life changing events.

We want Levi to have the best possible quality of life as a double amputee and therefore want to raise money to help with his recovery and the move from hospital to home.

Later, once he has learnt to walk, we would like to provide him the best bespoke prosthetic legs so he is able to live as an independent life as possible, enjoying the many activities he did before this tragic event changed his life forever.
