Being Brody

Donation protected
In October 2022, 4-year-old Brody, a local Portishead boy, was diagnosed with Perthes Disease after suffering from pain in his leg/hip. The pain was initially put down to "growing pains". After some persistence from his parents, they finally received the diagnosis.
Brody is the youngest of two siblings, and being pitchside at all of his brother's matches for the last three years, he could not wait for his football training to start.

Perthes' disease is a condition affecting the hip joint in children. It is rare (1 in 9,000 children are affected). Part or all of the femoral loses its blood supply and may become misshapen. The bone becomes very weak and can fracture easily.

Doctors have said his condition will get worse before it gets better, which will mean him spending some time in a wheelchair. He has had to stop all activities immediately and cannot attend school full-time. However, with rest and the proper treatment, at 16, he may be able to come out of a wheelchair and be active. Twelve years is a long time for this young man to miss out on all activities.

In short, Brody's parents need to buy him a special wheelchair to stop him from making his hip joint any worse and crumbling. The aim is to help Brody avoid having surgery, so he has to stop Football & all activity immediately; this includes playing with his friends in the school playground.

As you can imagine, this has dramatically impacted Brody and his family. Brody is a very sad and angry little boy right now as he doesn't understand why he can't play football like his big brother. We would like to be able to give Brody a little bit of light and provide him with something he "can" do when so much has been taken away.

We are raising money to help Carly & Rich (mum and dad) buy a wheelchair for Brody & to pay for some specialised physical therapy to keep Brody fit and strong, ready for his hopeful return to sport. These sessions aim to provide Brody with some fun and practical activity. We have enlisted the help of Dr Ben Pullen at the Youth Excercise Centre. The Youth Exercise Centre is a local centre that specialises in youth strength and conditioning. Whilst Brody has to stop all activity, this programme would be built around movements he can do from a wheelchair.

Brody's brother attends North Somerset Football club, run by ourselves. As a club, we would like to support the family through this challenging time and raise awareness of this condition in the hope that it can lead to a quicker diagnosis for others.
