What happened to my sister's family would have been unimaginable before the Covid-19 pandemic.
On Friday, March 27th, my brother-in-law, Kevin Henry, passed away suddenly, having been denied ambulance transport due to the Coronavirus pandemic. His widow, Geri, his wife of 30 years, has been struggling with expenses related to his passing due to the sudden loss of both of their incomes amidst the pandemic.
In the days before his death, Kevin was being treated with antibiotics, when he suddenly became sick and unable to stand or walk. When paramedics arrived the first time, they told Kevin that it was much too dangerous for him to be taken to the hospital due to the Coronavirus, and that the co-morbidity of his infection made him vulnerable to contracting the virus. The hospital, they said, was no place for him to be.
My sister was unable to carry him to her car, nor could he walk, to seek medical care on their own.
When the paramedics arrived the second time, they told Kevin that the hospital would not be able to treat his, or any other conditions at that time due to the virus, as everything non-virus related had been cancelled. Geri desperately turned to home-care nursing agencies for help.
While they were waiting for the nurse to arrive, Kevin passed away in my sister’s arms, despite heroic attempts at CPR by their teenage son. As it turned out, Kevin's antibiotic treatment had caused a severe infection which led to the sepsis that took his life so quickly.
The family is truly devastated without him, and traumatized by these heart-breaking circumstances.
Kevin was a kind, generous and good man; a veteran of the US Navy, a beloved husband to my sister for the past 30 years, a loving Father to his four children, and a loyal friend to many. His family and friends are lost without his wisdom, guidance, incredible humor and his presence in their lives.
We are raising funds for expenses related to Kevin's passing, as well as temporary relief for his widow Geri, who, in addition to the profound loss of her life partner, has also lost all income as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Whether or not you have the means to contribute to the fund, please help by sharing this page to your network, and by offering much-needed prayers for Kevin’s family as they struggle to accept this loss. We thank you in advance for your generosity and prayers, and hope that you and your families stay safe in these unprecedented times.
