Owen's medical bills

On 8/7/20, one of my best friends 18 yr old son, Owen, who just graduated from Agawam High school, had a stroke on his 3rd day at his first real job.  He was taken to the ER at Mercy Hospital and they quickly determined that he needed a level 1 trauma hospital with neurologists on staff in case he needed surgery so he was transferred to Hartford Hospital.  Owen is also a type 1 diabetic since the age of 4 so this has complicated his recovery as well.  During the time he was in Hartford hospital they ran every test they could think of and they did discover that he has a malformation in his basilic artery and has had least 2 prior TIA's (small strokes).
The family is already feeling the effects of the hospital bills (even with insurance!) and I am sure they are only going to grow.  His mom had to leave a job she had recently started and is not sure when she can return to work as she cannot leave him alone at this time.  With all the testing that was done, the Drs. have still not figured out why he had this stoke ( which has minimally effected his balance and some word retrieval ), and the family (Owen, his mom ,Carrie, his step dad, Rob, and his 22 yr old brother, Jacob) are all on edge that he will have another TIA or more major stroke.  It is unclear if Owen will be able to be cleared to return to work himself or to take the college classes he had hoped to this fall.  The doctors are going to do genetic testing next to see if that sheds any light on his condition.
