DEMENTIA UK
My mum, Pat Ashmore, passed away from frontotemporal dementia this year. It was a long, painful battle for her and those who loved her most. It's one of the rarer forms of the disease which is still not fully understood, which means it can take longer to get a diagnosis and consequently the support systems take much longer to establish. Dementia UK provides specialist Dementia support to help all those affected by dementia to live the best life possible.
Two thirds of the cost of dementia is paid by people with dementia and their families. Unpaid carers supporting someone with dementia save the UK economy £13.9 billion a year.
The total cost of care for people with dementia in the UK is £34.7billion. This is set to rise sharply over the next two decades, to £94.1billion by 2040.
Dementia is one of the main causes of disability later in life, ahead of cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke. As a country we spend much less on dementia than on these other conditions.
NEONATAL UNIT at JESSOPS WING MATERNITY HOSPITAL
Our dear friends Emma and Ross created the beautiful Ellie who was born when Emma was just 24 weeks pregnant. They have taken up permanent residence in Jessops ICU since then (90 days), until very recently moving to HDU. A huge step for Ellie and her devoted mummy and daddy.
Jessop Wing provides care for Sheffield babies as well as babies from other units. They provide specialist care for babies born prematurely or who become unwell.
There are over 78,000 babies per year who spend months of their lives on a neonatal unit.
While some newborns only need care for days, those who are more seriously ill can end up staying for up to a year. It costs the NHS £1,118 a day to look after a baby in intensive care where one in four of the 78,000 neonatal-care babies a year end up, £791 for those in a high-dependency unit and £505 for those requiring special care.
