No words exist to describe the devastation that exists in that moment you hear…“your baby has cancer”. Lindsay and Preston entered every parent’s worst nightmare on Wednesday, January 25th 2023, when their baby boy, known as Ry Guy to all of his biggest fans, was diagnosed with leukemia (B-cell ALL). Although doctors, and all of us, remain hopeful and optimistic about his ability to fight this disease, there is a long, hard road ahead for this family. Beyond the obvious costs for medical expenses, Ry Guy will need to travel 120 miles roundtrip for chemotherapy treatments and other followup visits at Primary Children’s Hospital over the next 2 ½ years. Preston is always working hard, but being self-employed he does not have the option of receiving paid time off from an employer. With three other children at home and sweet little Ry Guy who won’t let his mother leave his side, the logistics of how to juggle the family’s needs becomes quite complex. Although we can’t fight this fight for them, we hope to walk alongside Lindsay and Preston and their family as best we can by easing the financial stress of this situation.
Anyone who knows the Neilson family knows how hard they work and how willing they are to jump to help anyone in need. As a sister, I have been incredibly blessed by their generosity and kindness over the years and I know I’m not alone in this experience. Lindsay and Preston are givers and uplifters and I hope that as a community we can come together to allow some of that love and goodness to flow back to them now in their time of need. I also want to acknowledge the outpouring of love and support that is already in motion. There are so many ready and willing to help. It’s humbling and inspiring to witness the beauty of humanity at work. I know it can also be a struggle of wanting to help, but not knowing what to do. I wanted to start this GoFundMe as a way for any of us to help no matter where we are in the world. We can’t take away Ry Guy’s pain, or the worry and helplessness that a mother and father feel having to watch their baby fight this fight. But we can help lighten the load a little.
Thank you for joining us in support of the Neilson family. Your love and kindness mean the world to us.
