The 3R Fund for Immigrants is named for the problems we seek to solve – reunification (bonds), representation (attorneys), and relief (families affected by immigration legal issues).
The 3R Fund for Immigrants is a nonprofit formed in 2018 to provide funds to greater Cincinnati-area immigrant families for bonds, attorney fees, and other costs related to family members in immigration proceedings. All donations are used to help immigrant families. The Fund has no staff, all activities are voluntary, virtually no overhead.
There are more needs among immigrant neighbors in our community than the 3R Fund currently has funds to support.
The most acute need the 3R Fund meets is to help immigrant neighbors who are detained in prison, like criminals, to be released to their families while pursuing their immigration cases. This often requires posting a bond which can range from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. Second is to ensure they find and can afford a good, fair immigration attorney (Cincinnati only has a handful of pro bono immigration attorneys). An immigrant who is detained, with no attorney, has less than a five percent chance of winning their immigration case, versus closer to 40-50 percent if free and with legal representation. Everyone deserves due process.
We want to ensure that any detainee has legal representation and, if they can be released, lack of funds does not prevent that. (The average 3R Fund case costs us about $5,000.)
As you know, the U.S. government and some local jurisdications have significantly increased their efforts to arrest and detain immigrants, including those simply stopped for traffic offenses. An encounter like this now means a high risk of deportation for immigrants, many of whom have been here 10 or 20 years.
As you know, many immigrants come from countries that are very dangerous. So, it is not too much to say that your contribution to these efforts may well save a life.
Board of Directors:
The Fund is managed by a board of directors including Don Sherman, Civil Rights Director for LULAC-Cincinnati and retired attorney; Nancy Sullivan, executive director of Transformations-CDC in Price Hill (OH); Sister Alice Gerdeman, former executive director of the Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center (Cincinnati) and provincial superior, Sisters of Divine Providence in Melbourne, KY; and Jeff Richardson, a former senior vice president with Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati and founding board member of Esperanza Latino Center in Covington, KY. Each has substantial connections to the immigrant community in the area and is widely known among statewide advocates for immigrants.
