Two months ago, my mama went to see her doctor to have her hiatal hernia checked. She had had surgery to repair it two years ago and had been symptom free since then, until last May, when some symptoms started slowly resurfacing. When symptoms persisted for longer than she had been advised was normal, she requested a CT Scan. The scan showed no issues with the hernia but did show a potential mass and some other spots.
After almost a month of testing, the diagnosis came as a shock to all of us:
Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer
We were incredibly privileged and blessed to get into a trial at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which combines regular chemotherapy with immunotherapy and a trial medication to help improve the immune system's ability to combat the cancer cells. My mom's care is in very good hands, and she is in very good spirits and praying for a miracle.
Right now, things are still very overwhelming. All of the treatment is in Seattle, which poses many logistical issues for us and our small alpaca farm. And of course, this diagnosis and treatment plan has also come with a deluge of unexpected expenses.
We need financial support to help with the following:
* Out-of-pocket medical expenses
* Home healthcare supplies and equipment
* Transportation and vehicle maintenance costs
* House cleaning service
* Meal delivery service
* Home maintenance costs to improve safety and home health
As my Aunt Peggy said, my mama is the heart and soul of our family. She is an authentic, brave and passionate spirit who is loved by all who meet her, especially her family and her Church. She has devoted so much of her life to being there for others - from opening up our home to family members in need of a place to stay, to striking up conversations and offering support to strangers outside the dentist's office. Right now, she is in need of support and my hope is to bring people together to show her the same generosity she shows in her daily life and has ingrained in me.
