Support Kristin's Aggressive Stage 4 Cancer Fight

On September 1, Kristin woke to unexpected pain which began a 3-week ordeal of tests, appointments, imaging and questions, culminating in a diagnosis of Metastatic high-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary, the most aggressive ovarian cancer. She has fluid accumulating in her lungs and in her abdomen.

The family is still waiting for an oncologist and a treatment plan amidst BC’s backed up medical system. The primary tumor likely requires exploratory surgery; the wait times are alarming. Doctors braced the family they’re in for a 3-4 month wait for the necessary surgery and at least 6 weeks before chemotherapy can start.

This delay, coupled with the potential that BC Cancer will deny her treatment due to the stage and progression, poses a severe threat to Kristin’s life, forcing her to consider out-of-country, out-of-pocket treatment options, though she is unable to fly due to fluid in her lungs. She is actively working with a naturopath out of pocket to fortify her immune system and buy time.

Kristin and Donovan are both self-employed business owners in the community. As such, they do not have access to EI, disability insurance or other public benefits. The cancer has rapidly robbed her of energy and she has lost her income due to her inability to work with clients.

Kristin, Donovan, and their child Cipher, now at VIU, are confronting tremendous challenges. In addition to Kristin’s fight for her life, the mix of escalating inflation, added medical expenses and loss of income have put them at their stability and security in jeopardy. To make matters worse, should Kristin not survive, her passing could leave Donovan and Cipher homeless.
