Want to join me and 412 Food Rescue in helping support Pittsburgh restaurants AND feed local families? Pat Bruener here, I am a photographer and run a Pittsburgh based clothing company called Bankrupt Bodega. Part of our mission has always included giving back to the community by donating to local non-profits. 412 Food Rescue has been our beneficiary for the most part.
During the pandemic i've really fell in love with cycling, as it is a safe social distancing activity and noticeably has helped my physical and mental health. While i've been riding 20, 30, 40+ miles a day I have been thinking of ways to make my daily rides more impactful. Eureka! A solo Bike-A-Thon fundraiser to benefit an organization that I already work closely with, and who are making moves to help with pandemic relief efforts.
412 Food Rescue is a local non-profit who's mission is to combat hunger and to help eliminate food waste. The organization is launching a new program called Community Takeout to support local restaurants and their employees, and feed families. The program’s goal is to support restaurants through this crisis by providing compensation for restaurant workers to create single-serve meals that will then distribute to local families in need. The program will start with five restaurants and aims to grow to more as funding allows. The current five are: DiAnoias Eatery , Bae Baes Kitchen , Khalils Restaurant , The Warren , and Arnolds Coffee & Tea . But, 412 Food Rescue are looking for fundraisers to make the campaign a huge success.
That's why I'm challenging myself to ride 412 miles in one week. I have never done this many miles in a week before and I know it will be hard, but I have stepped up my training and know I can do it. I am eager to start. The ride will take place Friday, May 22nd through Thursday, May 28th. You can follow along on Instagram by following @BankruptBodega. I'll be sharing my routes and mile updates, as well as photos and videos from my travels around the Pittsburgh region. The ride will happen RAIN or SHINE! See below for donation specifics and more info on 412 Food Rescue. This fundraiser will end on Saturday, May 30th at 11:59pm but you can donate year round via the 412 Food Rescue Website. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me. Each donation big or small encourages me more to finish my goal - I'll be thinking about all of you out there on the road! <3
+ What To Donate: Community Takeout is powered by your donations! Every contribution goes directly to purchasing a meal from a local restaurant that will then be delivered to community members who are food insecure.
$10 = one meal
$70 = one week of meals
$140 = two weeks of meals
$300 = full month of meals
+ Where exactly is my donation going? For every $10 donated:
$6 goes to the restaurant preparing the meal.
$2 goes toward logistics, delivery, and program coordination.
$2 benefits Greater Pittsburgh Restaurant Workers Mutual Aid (PRWA) — a grassroots organization aiding unemployed restaurant workers
+ How To Donate:
- Via: This Go Fund Me page. All donations are 100% tax deductible and go directly to the organization.
+ Other Ways To Help:
- By sharing this fundraiser across your social media! This helps so so much and I encourage all of you to share even if you are unable to donate. If you want to can email [email redacted] and I will send you the flyer to share.
- By becoming a Food Rescue Hero: Download the 412 Food Rescue app for Android or iPhone which allows you to rescue food that would otherwise go to waste, and re-route it to organizations that serve food insecure families.
+ More Info About 412 Food Rescue: 412 Food Rescue was founded as a direct response to the fact that 40 percent off all the food produced is wasted while 1 in 7 are food insecure. To further complicate this issue and add another dimension to the problem, food waste is the single largest component in landfills and one of the leading causes of greenhouse gas emissions. 412 Food Rescue recognized this problem as an opportunity that can be approached with an innovative logistical solution that pairs technology with civic engagement. So far this year the organization has recovered 1.33 million pounds of food, providing 1.11 million meals, and preventing 725,668 Lbs. of CO2 in the atmosphere. Those statistics coming from a nonprofit in Pittsburgh are just amazing to me.
